"Learning from the Master: Humility that Blesses"

Speaker: Pastor Alex Rivero Series: Guest Speaker Passage: Matthew 5:1–3

“Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them. He said: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

1. The humble learns from the best example: Jesus Christ. (v. 1-2)
   a. Reaching the world requires compassion.
      i. Mathew 9:36 – “When he saw he crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
   b. Reaching the world requires discipleship.
      i. 2 Timothy 2:2 – “And the things you have Heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”

2. The humble recognizes their position in the kingdom of God. (v. 3)
   a. Recognizes their dependence on God.
      i. Psalms 23:1-4 – “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my sol. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
   b. Recognizes their total inability without the power of God.
      i. Romans 1:16 – “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.”
   c. Recognizes the privilege to be in the Family of God.
    i. Ephesians 2:19 – “Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household,”

3. The humble will receive compensation from Jesus Christ. (v. 3)
   a. They will receive forgiveness.
      i. Hebrews 8:12 – “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
   b. They will receive communion in the Church of Jesus Christ.
      i. 1 John 1:3 – “We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.”
   c. They will receive eternal life.
      i. John 5:24 – “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my Word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.”
