“And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ‘Jeremiah, what do you see?’ And I said, ‘I see an almond branch.’ Then the LORD said to me, ‘You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.’” Jeremiah 1:11-12 ESV
- What is the it that God is performing? The manifestation of His glory. God glorifies Himself in the judgments of Israel and Judah by the nations, Jeremiah 6:6-8, 16; Isaiah 5:16; 43:7, 25; 1 Corinthians 10:31.
- What is my word? The message of God in the Bible - God’s words in the mouth of His prophets, Jeremiah 1:9; Exodus 17:14; 1 Corinthians 14:37; Ephesians 3:4-10; 1 John 4:6.
- Therefore, what is the purpose of His Word? What is the Word performing? The exaltation of the glory of God, Psalm 19; Isaiah 43:7; 55:8-11; 1 Corinthians 10:31; 2 Corinthians 4:6-15; Ephesians 1:6, 12, 14; 3:10; Revelation 4:11; 5:12-13.
- What is the watching? It is God acting in accordance with his Word for His glory and our contentment and joy.
- What does it mean to see well? Jeremiah 1:16; 15:16; 1 Corinthians 2:6-16; 2 Corinthians 4:4, 6.
- Is Jeremiah’s call unique? No, 1 Corinthians 10:31; 2 Corinthians 4:4 - 5:21; 1 Timothy 4:12-16.
